Game Preview Capsule: Cedar (1-3) at Hurricane (1-3)

GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Cedar (1-3, 0-1) at Hurricane (1-3, 1-0)
Previous Meeting: Tigers 31, Redmen 13 (Sept. 7, 2012 at Cedar)
Broadcast: None

REDMEN
cedar-smClassification: 3AA, South Region
Coach: Todd Peacock (27th year, 155-128-1 overall)
Offense: Triple option
Last game: Lost to Desert Hills 25-0
Players to watch: PK Jeff Rogers has great feet … and great hands. Playing at WR for Cedar, he has become a big play guy. QB Austin Obering played fairly well last week. FB Dallin Grover was the lone back to make any decent yardage vs. Desert Hills.
PPG: 22.3
PAPG: 21.5
Trend: With that smothering Desert Hills defense, Cedar really struggled last Friday, though the Redmen did make some strides in the passing game. One things that seems to be missing is the running ability (or even willingness) of the quarterbacks. Cedar has a long history of great running QBs and they need either Obering or Brecken Lewis to provide that. Right now, both are averaging less than three yards a carry.

TIGERS
hurricane-smClassification: 3AA, South Region
Coach: Chris Homer (12th year, 86-47 overall)
Offense: Wing-T
Last game: Beat Payson 31-22
Players to watch: It looks like JD Stanworth is the man at fullback (86 yards, 2 TDs last week). Hurricane’s defense played well vs. Payson, Charlie Sefita and Kole Richins stuffing the run and Jay Williams and Noah Elison patrolling the secondary. PK Ethan Stratton continues to be a factor.
PPG: 18.0
PAPG: 29.5
Trend: Two very non-Hurricane things have hurt the Tigers this year: turnovers and inconsistent offensive play. Three big turnovers last week turned a 24-3 blowout into a 24-22 barnburner. But a consistent, time-consuming drive featuring nine fullback gashes late in the game clinched things. Now that’s Hurricane football.

GAME OUTLOOK
Though the points allowed per game averages don’t show it, both these teams play some tough defense. Cedar shut down the Desert Hills running game last week. Hurricane did the same to Payson. But both these teams want to run the ball. It’s what they do. We don’t see a lot of points on the board in this one and it actually may come down to which team can throw the ball just enough to get the job done.

STGnews (record) PREDICTION
Andy Griffin (22-2) — Hurricane
Darren Cole (17-7) — Hurricane
Parry’s spread: Hurricane by 8
