ST. GEORGE – A motorcyclist was critically injured and transported by Life Flight to Dixie Regional Medical Center this evening after being hit square-center by a van on state Route 18 near The Ledges residential community.
The accident occurred at 10:08 p.m. in the area of mile posts 14 and 15. As of 11:30 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol reported traffic still backed up as the accident scene remained under investigation and reconstruction.
Two motorcycles traveling together on SR-18 pulled over to the side of the road to make a U-turn, Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Todd Johnson said. The first proceeded with the U-turn and then passed a van going in the opposite direction. As the van proceeded the second motorcyclist pulled out to make his U-Turn and was hit square center by the van.
The motorcyclist hit is in critical condition but the UHP sergeant at the scene reported that he was communicating, Johnson said.
“They won’t know more until later, he took a good hit,” Johnson said, “we don’t know how extensive his injuries are, he was transported to the hospital in St. George.”
There were no other injuries noted, Johnson said.
The accident remains under investigation.
