Baseball coach Mike Littlewood headlines Dixie State convocation on Sunday

ST. GEORGE – Dixie State University President Dr. Stephen D. Nadauld invites all students, faculty, staff and the community to attend the sixth annual DSU Convocation on Sunday at 7 p.m. in the Avenna Center Cox Auditorium on the DSU campus. The convocation is free to attend and refreshments will be served at a reception following the event.

The convocation was originally slated to feature inspirational addresses from DSU alumni Dave and Cheryl Rose. However, due to an unexpected medical issue that arose on Monday, the former DSU and current BYU men’s basketball coach and his wife will be unable to attend the event.

“First and foremost, we want to extend our best wishes for a complete recovery for Dave and our support for him and his family,” Nadauld said. “Dave and Cheryl were very gracious in accepting our invitation to speak and we look forward to welcoming them back to Dixie at a later date.”

On Tuesday, Nadauld announced that former DSU and current BYU baseball coach Mike Littlewood has accepted a last-minute invitation to speak at Sunday’s convocation. Littlewood spent 16 years in the DSU dugout before taking the reigns as head baseball coach at his alma mater in 2012. He is the most successful coach in the school’s history, having compiled a 563-238 (.702) record, while capturing nine league titles along the way, including seven SWAC championships and two PacWest crowns. He led DSU to four NJCAA World Series appearances, including a 2004 national title and a national runner-up finish in 2001.

“We are pleased to welcome Coach Littlewood back to campus, especially on this short of notice. He spent nearly 20 years here and is very familiar with the quality of students we have here,” Nadauld said. “He is a dynamic speaker and motivator, and I am confident that those in attendance will come away with a renewed passion to succeed this upcoming school year.”

The annual convocation event was introduced as a new campus tradition by Nadauld in 2008, as a way to establish a four-year culture at DSU. He observed that these types of non-denominational gatherings are held at other college campuses throughout the country and have an inspirational flavor to them.

In addition to a keynote address, the convocation program includes inspirational songs and performances by students and faculty from DSU’s Fine Arts department. Joining DSU students, administrators, faculty and staff in attendance will be a number of St. George-area clergy representatives, along with local government leaders and the school’s Board of Trustees, among other dignitaries.
