HURRICANE – On Saturday, Because Animals Matter will host the Dog Day Spectacular and Dog Walk Against Animal Abuse at the Hurricane Community Center, a full day of family-friendly fun.
People and their pets are encouraged to participate in the third-annual walk together, which begins at 8 a.m. The course is a casual 1.5-mile loop around the community center. Registration costs $25 per dog-owner team and includes snacks, a drink and a souvenir T-shirt.
BAM will also host, in partnership with Zion Disc Dogs and Atomic Dogs, the first-ever Skyhoundz Discdogathon World Championship Qualifier starting at 9 a.m. More commonly known as a Frisbee dog competition, it will be a very exciting display of talented and athletic dogs.
Enjoy agility and rally obedience demonstrations directed by Filomena Diaz-Johnson of the Doggie Dude Ranch. These demos may just inspire you to work and play with your dog in a whole new way, as training helps all dogs become better canine citizens.
Local vendors and retailers will offer a variety of goods and services, including The Home Depot with one of their kids’ workshops as part of the kids’ activity zone where children can play games for a chance to win a toy for their dog or cat. Be sure to arrive early to ensure your children get to participate, as there will be a limited number of workshop kits available.
If you’re looking for a new furry family member, there will also be adoptable animals from several rescue organizations, including BAM, H.A.R.T. Homeless Animal Rescue Team of Utah, We Care For Animals and Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue. Additionally the 2014 BAM Pets Make A Difference fundraising calendar will be revealed and sold for the first time.
All entry fees from the walk and additional donations collected throughout the day will benefit BAM’s community outreach effort and the new Meika’s Memorial Medical Fund, a program recently established by BAM to assist area shelters and local residents with funding for pets’ emergency medical needs. The general event is free to attend.
