ST. GEORGE – Sponsored by the St. George Lions Club and certified by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the Dixie Round-up Rodeo has long been a popular event in the local community. This week, cowboys and cowgirls of all ages will delight spectators in a variety of exciting events, from bull riding, barrel racing and calf roping to mutton bustin’ for the youngsters and the presentation of the lovely rodeo royalty.
The 79th annual Round-up will be held Thursday through Saturday at the historic Dixie Sunbowl in the heart of St. George. Gates open at 6 p.m. nightly, and entertainment will be held from 6-7:30. The rodeo will be held from 7:30-10. Members of the Utah Army National Guard 222nd Regiment will perform a tribute to the nation’s flag and armed forces, accompanied by a performance of the national anthem, following the event’s traditional patriotic theme.
The majestic, impeccably trained draft horses of the Diamond Z Ranch in Cedar City will return, along with many other top-notch animals and the professional athletes riding them, the winners of whom will qualify for the National Finals Rodeo. This year’s event will also include the debut of “The Iron Horse Round-up” specialty act. On Friday, spectators are asked to be “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” to support breast cancer treatment at Dixie Regional Medical Center. A rodeo parade starting at the Sunbowl will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Ram Truck will be holding a sweepstakes for a new truck. Fans just need to visit the center’s display at the rodeo and enter the Ram Rodeo Sweepstakes for a chance to win the drawing, which will take place at the end of the year.
General admission tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for children age 11 and under, except on kids’ night, Thursday, when all children under age 12 enter for free. Children age 2 and under are always free. Tickets will be available at the gate. You can also reserve some of the best seats in the arena by purchasing advance tickets for $15 at the Lions Club office, located less than a block from the Sunbowl on 100 South.
Aside from the prize money awarded to top competitors, all of the rodeo’s proceeds from tickets and concessions is distributed via the Lions Club to various local charities.
