HURRICANE – It was initially reported Monday that the two-vehicle accident that occurred in the area of 480 West State St. was triggered by a driver’s failure to yield to oncoming traffic. The Hurricane City Police Department released additional information Wednesday night clarifying what happened.

Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell said the accident occurred between 8:15-8:30 p.m., Monday, when a Ford Focus pulling out of a local business driveway was impacted by an Oldsmobile Sedan. The Oldsmobile was traveling in the outside eastbound lane.

The driver and passenger in the Ford Focus sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the Oldsmobile was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center, though in stable condition.

Both vehicles were disabled and towed away from the scene. Traffic on State Street was temporarily hampered due to the crash.

Originally the driver of the Ford Focus was suspected of failing to yield to oncoming traffic. However, according to new information from the police, it appears the Oldsmobile was driving with its headlights off.

There was no corroborating evidence to substantiate the claim at the scene of the accident Monday evening, Buell said in a statement. Officers obtained video surveillance of the accident that showed the Oldsmobile was not driving with its headlights on at the time of the accident.

Based on the new information, the police determined the unused headlights were a contributing factor in the accident.

At times it is difficult to determine the cause of an accident without those who are willing to come forward as a witness and give a statement” Buell said. “We encourage anyone who witnessed this accident and has not spoken with an officer to please contact the Hurricane City Police Department.”

It’s wrong how HPD reported this accident as “Failure to yield”, when they still are not completely certain exactly what happened. It would seem much better to have posted “Cause is still under investigation”…

If there are any witnesses to this accident, please contact me. The only person who stopped to assist at the scene was a male driving a green SUV. The police excused him to leave the scene without any further contact info being obtained when he replied he did not see the accident happen.

I take it you or someone you know was the at fault driver? Haha the story clearly states what happened. And why would the police gather someone’s information who didn’t witness anything?

  • Brad Winder September 11, 2013 at 12:11 am

The story clearly state what was presumed to have happened, but not what actually did happen…

Where’s your real name Mr./Ms. Truth and Mr/Ms. Tongue?

    • Truth September 11, 2013 at 1:19 pm

Why ya wanna come beat us up or what? Haha

  • Brad Winder September 11, 2013 at 6:00 pm

No, I just think it’s interesting you’ll post something, but not give a real name. By the way, the fault was overturned. Just like I indicated at first, it would have been much better to have posted, “Cause of accident is under investigation”.

No, the “fault was overturned,” is NOT a correct statement. HPD now states the oncoming vehicle was operating without headlights, and this was a “contributing factor.” If you don’t know what that means, junior, look it up.
The fact that one idiot was driving without his lights on, does not absolve the other idiot from actually using their eyes and looking to see if some vehicle is coming. That area is well lighted, and if the driver that left the business driveway, had actually looked before pulling out, that vehicle would have been seen.
So quit your whining and sniveling. You screwed the pooch, and you know it.

Not over turned boss… Lights were a “contributing factor” failing to yield was also a factor. Just sayin..

If the other car was traveling with its lights off could go either way to be honest. Even though it was a lit area it was driving illegally without its lights. Not exactly a bright colored car that was traveling with its lights off on a rainy night. As to the person who is called truth you are obviously a narrow minded person or just someone trolling for a fight. If you believe everything you read in the news then you really must be dumb. If your just trolling then really get a life. The guy is obviously just trying to find if there are any witnesses to what happened. I won’t be reading this again so reply with what you want I won’t see it.
This is about all the time I can spare for people like you.

Oh I’ll bet you WILL be reading this, Garret. Otherwise, why take the time to post in the first place? If you are just going to make bald statements, but not partake of any discussion about what you posted, then you are the one that needs to get a life.

At least my evil twin lives in the real world!

  • Josh Dalton September 12, 2013 at 8:38 am

There is no other place on Earth that people drive without headlights MORE than Utah!
