Drunk driver causes head-on collision on SR-9

HURRICANE – A head-on collision on state Route 9 in Hurricane put three people in the hospital early Sunday morning, and shut down traffic while emergency workers responded.

Hurricane City Police Sgt. Brandon Buell  said the accident occurred around 12:55 a.m., a few miles east of the Hurricane Walmart, when a gray BMW passed the center lane, crashing head-on into a brown Chevy pickup truck.

Buell said officers at the scene had cause to believe that the driver of the BMW had been drinking. He was injured in the accident and taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center.

Both of the men in the pickup truck were also injured and taken to DRMC.  According to a Facebook post by the wife of one of the men in the truck, one suffered a broken leg while the the other dislocated his hip.

The driver of the BMW has been charged with a DUI. None of the injuries in the accident were considered to be life-threatening, Buell said. Utah Highway Patrol and the Washington County Sheriff’s office also responded and assisted at the scene.

Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

You got some bad info sister!

      • Cassey Duffy September 9, 2013 at 3:29 pm

That was the information given to us by a police officer on scene and at the hospital.

        • Truth September 9, 2013 at 6:15 pm

Well that officer was sorely mistaken and the hospital doesn’t give out info on patient conditions in their care. Violates hippa 🙂

Get ur facts straight cassy knows its her brother in law and my brother

        • Truth September 10, 2013 at 10:11 am

Ooo believe me dear my facts are completely straight!

    • what September 9, 2013 at 8:36 pm

Yeah…. you are way off there buddy. First of all you are not pronounced dead until you are dead and they are not trying to bring you back. Second , the officer nor the hospital staff would tell you that. Third, the police said they were non life threatening injuries. I am pretty sure if the guy “died” at the scene that would be considered life threatening.

It certainly was a blessing no one was killed in what likes like a high impact crash. The roads are dangerous enough without adding alcohol to the mix. We certainly hope all involved a speedy and full recovery.

    • joanna September 9, 2013 at 7:36 am

I know! Between the drinkers and the texters, it’s a wonder we’re not all laid up in the hospital.

      • JOSH DALTON September 9, 2013 at 12:09 pm

        I know tha’s right!

    • Richard September 9, 2013 at 8:03 am

Well I hope the gentlemen in the truck make a speedy recovery. The guy in the BMW can suffer for a while, we don’t need him back on the road for at least 5 years or more!

Terrifying. We have a new bar in town…for anyone who does not know…at Baristas. If he was found to have left there plastered then I hope they FINALLY lose their business license. I passed this point about 1130 last night and went by Albertos (same parking lot). I saw cars in the Barista’s lot…so they were still open. Wonderful. What next???

    • stupid mormon September 9, 2013 at 9:05 am

ohnoes! we have a bar in town! we’re all doomed! shut up with your ridiculous moral imposition freak. bars are not the problem, the choices of individuals are. same person could have been drinking at his house all night.

      • Brett Jackson September 9, 2013 at 10:17 am

I understand your frustration and agree that individual responsibility is at concern. But I think it would be be better to express it in a more respectful manner.
“ridiculous moral imposition freak” is an immature way of responding to somebody with differing views than your own. Your username makes it clear that blanket insults are your method of communication.

    • Craig September 9, 2013 at 11:16 am

@ san, you forgot to take your logical pills this morning.

    • snowfield September 11, 2013 at 1:42 pm

It’s kind of a leap to assume that because there is a new bar in town, the driver must have been there.

  • Teri September 9, 2013 at 9:10 am

San, has nothing to do with a new bar in town. It’s the driver who chose to drink and drive. So many people take others life I to their own hands when they decide to drink n get behind the wheel of a car. Deadliest weapon if you ask me. Thankful the guys in the truck are ok, as for the guys who chose to drink n drive hope the law doesn’t just give a slap in the wrist n hold him accountable for his actions.

    • snowfield September 11, 2013 at 1:47 pm

I agree, the book needs to be thrown at the drunk driver. I’m a drinker but I have no sympathy for those who choose to drive after drinking. If you go somewhere to drink, have a designated sober driver.

  • Pill Popper Watcher September 9, 2013 at 10:37 am

We have far more to worry about in this town with the number of good ole Mormons who are pill-poppers, than we do about the few idiots who decide to drink and drive. Not supposed to be driving a vehicle after taking your daily anti-depression and pain meds!

  • JOSH DALTON September 9, 2013 at 12:02 pm

Folks….I too feel that there are quite a few Mormons out there that are hypacritical and judge some of us because of the choices we make. Eventhough some of these Mormons are enrolled in the same smoke sessions as yourself. This really is a gray area when it comes to religion. Remeber Jesus turned water into wine and kept the party going. I don’t think any one religion is guilty of drinking and driving. Every single person who drinks might choose to drive, and if they tell you no, then they are lying. Now don’t get me wrong most of the LDS I have met are about as likable and trust worty as an iphone to me. The Mormans I kick it with are bloody Gangsters! They hang out with me and they don’t drink. Its the Mormans that feel they can’t be in the same room with somebody with beer or they think that I am a bad person because I drink. Those people are ignorant as all get out! So at this point who cares if anyone involved was LDS…GO FALCONS!

    • Virginia Rivers September 9, 2013 at 1:27 pm

You aren’t a bad person because you drink! You are just a rotten person anyway, whether you drink or not.

      • Richard September 9, 2013 at 10:02 pm

Virgina they finally let you out! Shoot me an email and let me know how the meds are going and if they has to use 4 points on ya. Great to see your free though.

  • Truth September 9, 2013 at 12:25 pm

It’s funny how everything resorts back to religion? I guess you can’t have an opinion about anything or it makes you a crazy ignorant pill popping Mormon now days?? Religion has nothing to do with any of this story.. It’s about the bad choice of one individual who decided to drive when he was impaired.

    • snowfield September 11, 2013 at 1:50 pm

Agreed. Heck, many of us have a Mormon friend who likes to go see bands at clubs and is the designated driver in exchange for having dinner and gas paid for.

  • michelle September 10, 2013 at 1:15 am

Excuse me but Casey is right the man in the bmw was dead on screen the people in the brown Chevy was my brothers both did recover well and they did ressitate that pos that’s why he is in jail

    • Truth September 11, 2013 at 1:10 pm

Well considering I talked to your “dead man” while on the side of the road… I’d say he was very much alive the whole time.. 🙂
