ST. GEORGE – The Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum enjoyed a nice turnout from the public for its “Wings and Wheels” event Saturday at the St. George Municipal Airport.

The event encouraged interest in the museum and its growth plans and needs, such as volunteers for the museum and donations to help them build an additional hangar allowing for a broader display of planes.
Live bands, the “Famous Unknowns” and “Identity Crisis,” played at Wings and Wheels, children jumped about in bounce houses and climbed a rock wall, and guests enjoyed the displays of classic planes, classic cars and classic memorabilia at the museum.
The “Wings” featured included a MiG 15 Chinese, built in 1951 and flown during the Korean war, a British Jet Promast, built in 1965 and used to train pilots, and a MiG 17, built in 1959 and flown heavily during the Vietnam war.
The “Wheels” rolled in with local owners showing off their classic cars in complement to their flying counterparts. Although, many of those hit the road at the first sign of lightning and thunder boding Saturday’s incoming storm.

Artifacts of fighter pilots and planes of yesteryear fill the museum including model planes, flight suits and helmets and other items preserved from engagements in wars and conflicts during the past century; these are items that enliven the memories of those who lived and fought with purpose in those hostile engagements, and one can almost see those veterans time-warp backwards as they explore the material residue.
The Warbirds are hoping to have the Heritage Foundation Traveling Warbirds Museum show up for their next “Wings and Wheels,” which they forecast for April 2014. In the meantime, the Warbirds host private and public events throughout the year, like the fall “Jet Blast” to be held October 18-19. Visit the museum website given below.
“They are a traveling museum full of old planes, they have a B-17 bomber that people can pay to go for a 20 minute ride in while in the air they can move about the plane and experience all that it was, “ Warbird Sam Wood said.
The Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum is open to the public at the St. George Municipal Airport, daily on Thursday-Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers to help operate it are always needed.
