CEDAR CITY – A 38-year-old Santa Clara man is in critical condition after his vehicle collided with two overpass pillars on Interstate 15 and caught fire Saturday afternoon.
The car hit the first pillar while traveling northbound on I-15 near mile marker 47, just south of Cedar City at around 3:30 p.m. Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lawrence Hopper said that there were no passengers in the car when it drifted off the left shoulder of the road and struck the pillar on the driver’s side of the car. The vehicle then went into a spin and hit the second pillar, again on the driver’s side.
The car caught fire after coming to a rest; however passing motorists were able to free the unconscious man from the car before the flames reached him. The driver was taken by ambulance to Valley View Medical Center in Cedar City.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident and no one else was injured in the accident. The name of the driver has not yet been released.
