Vehicle theft arrest leads to drug and weapons charges

ST. GEORGE – A Las Vegas man was arrested after a vehicle theft was reported Tuesday morning.

Around 10 a.m., Tuesday, the St. George Police Department was contacted by an individual at the Burger King on South Main Street who reported his truck had been stolen.

While investigating the incident Police Sgt. Sam Despain said officers located the truck in the area of Snow Park. Officers made contact with 43-year-old David Hernandez, of Las Vegas, during the course of their investigation and Despain said they believe him to be responsible for the vehicle theft.

During the investigation, police also confiscated from Hernandez what Despain described as a a large knife, as well as suspected marijuana.

Hernandez was arrested and booked into Washington County’s Purgatory Correctional Facility on two second-degree felonies for drug possession and vehicle theft, and two class-A misdemeanors for drug paraphernalia and possession of a weapon by a restricted person. Bail has been set at $23,884.

Despain said anytime a person is found with suspected narcotics, they are considered a “restricted person” and charged accordingly if they have ready-access to a weapon.

Ed. Note: Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
