Tigers learn tough road lessons with loss at Skyline

SALT LAKE CITY –Some lessons are harder to learn than others. For the youthful Hurricane Tigers, it was a long night of on-the-job-training.

Hurricane began its 2013 season with a road trip to the north to face the Skyline Eagles and walked away with a humbling 28-6 loss.

“We faced a very experienced, well-coached team, and unfortunately fell on the losing end,” said Hurricane head coach Chris Homer. “They got a couple of scores on us early in the first quarter and we were not able to recover.”

hurricane-smskyline-smSkyline scored first on an 84-yard run by Chris Williams. Shortly after that, Skyline quarterback Braxton Chipman delivered a 2-yard pass to Daniel Stephens. After the PAT, the Eagles had a 14-0 advantage.

In the second quarter, the Tigers were able to get on the board when all-stater Ethan Stratton connected on an 18-yard field goal to go in at the half down 14-3.

“We had stretches of the game where we played very well,” said Homer. “We are young, we are inexperienced and we are playing a very tough non-conference schedule. But what better way is there to prepare a young and inexperienced team for Region 9 play?”

In the second half, the Eagles again put two touchdowns on the board. In the third quarter, Chipman hit Luke Morris with a 50-yard pass for a touchdown. Running back Aleck Russon scored the Eagles final touchdown on a 15-yard run.

Stratton matched his first-half field goal with a 21-yarder in the second.

“Despite the loss, we had some stellar play from Adlai Elison at quarterback,” said Homer. “He threw for over 150 yards, which is unusual for us. Cody Lebaron had a good game at linebacker and Charlie Sefita also played very well on defense.

“It was a tough opener. But we learn from it and we will get better.”
