Game Preview Capsule: Pine View at Judge Memorial

GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Pine View (0-0, 0-0) at Judge Memorial (0-0, 0-0)
Previous Meeting – This is their first meeting.

PANTHERS
Pine-view-smClassification: 3AA, South Region
Coach: Ray Hosner (13th year, 101-37 overall)
Offense: I-back and spread
Last game: Lost to Spanish Fork 26-21 in 2012 3A playoffs
Players to watch: QB Kody Wilstead is expected to have a big year if he can stay healthy. He missed five games last season with an ankle injury. A magnifying glass will be on the PV offensive line, which has just one returning starter, Germo Fierro. Thor Katoa is a Manimal at linebacker.
PPG: 29.0 (last season)
PAPG: 21.5 (last season)
Trend: The Pine View defense gave up too many points last season, but was very young. Nearly the entire crew is back, so the D should be much improved. Meanwhile, the offense has an experienced QB and receivers, but a new line. It’s an interesting mix. The 3AA South media thought enough of the Panthers to pick them to finish second in the region, which automatically makes them a state contender.

BULLDOGS
judge-memorial-smClassification: 3A, North Region
Coach: James Cordova (11th year, 59-56 overall)
Offense: Triple option
Last game: Lost to Morgan 30-0 in the 2012 3A playoffs
Players to watch: The Bulldogs run the option, which puts a lot of onus on the quarterback, Kaden Ellis. But he started last year and accounted for 19 touchdowns, so he should be prepared. Mark and Max Burnett, hard-nosed brothers, will cover the fullback spot, with Michael Kearns as the pitch-man in the option. On defense, Sean McMininee will be busy at safety with Pine View expected to sling the ball around.
PPG: 22.1 (last season)
PAPG: 21.6 (last season)
Trend: Surprisingly, the Salt Lake City team did not join fellow Catholic school Juan Diego in the larger 3AA. The Bulldogs should be glad. In 3AA, they would have been also-rans. In 3A, they immediately become a contender. Judge beat the bad teams last season, but got whipped by Spanish Fork, Juan Diego and Morgan by a combined 90-17.

GAME OUTLOOK
This looks like a game Pine View could run away with, but what about that offensive line. A new coach and four new starters make us wonder. Plus, Pano Tiatia, who should eventually have a big year is being held out while he competes for the USA in world class junior boxing. Justice Santiago and Tristan Duran will play running back for the Panthers, who like to run more than most people think. Judge’s triple-option is very much like Cedar’s and Pine View usually handles that pretty well.

STGnews (record) PREDICTION
Andy Griffin (0-0) — Pine View
Darren Cole (0-0) — Pine View
