CEDAR CITY – Local resident Marilyn Kidwell has been crocheting for over four decades, but now her hands, crochet hook, and yarn are working to help those in need.

In the fall of 2012, Kidwell began crocheting hats for disabled and homeless military veterans. She created Hats for Our Veterans, which over the past several months, has become a group of fantastic volunteers from all over the United States who have crocheted, knitted, or donated store-bought hats to be given to heroes down on their luck.

“The philosophy of Hats for Our Veterans is that even the smallest act of kindness can be filled with all the love in the world,” Kidwell said.

Hats for Our Veterans has approximately 300 hats ready to be given to veterans in need. In September, Kidwell will deliver these hats to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Salt Lake City, where they will be distributed to residents of the George E. Wahlen Veterans’ Medical Center. Each hat will be bagged and have an “appreciation tag” with the name and location of the person who made or donated the hat.

Hats received after September will be donated to the new Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins.

Volunteers may choose any color and pattern for the hats they make or donate; the only requirement is that hats be warm, as some veterans who will wear them are homeless and will be exposed to the harsh winter ahead.
