Similar to driving directions, the Google Maps app for Android and iPhone provides simple, user-friendly directions for the SunTran bus system by inputting an address and destination. Directions will include all pertinent information, including distance to stops, routes, transfers, estimated time and fares.

“This will benefit visitors, newcomers or anyone that is unfamiliar with the SunTran bus system. People can now get directions to use the bus without having to sort through timetables or interpret route maps,” Mobility Manager Levi Roberts said for Five County Association of Governments.

The association recently partnered with SunTran and Google Maps to make SunTran data available in the Google Maps app. The recently updated app enables anyone with an internet-connected mobile device to access step-by-step directions to utilize the bus system in St. George.

The association took on the project as a part of its mobility management program, which aims to maximize transportation access for people with limited mobility while efficiently utilizing community transportation resources. Association staff are coordinating with SunTran to provide current transit data to Google and will maintain continual communication to assure transit information is presented accurately.

The app is expected to greatly increase the visibility of SunTran, helping convert potential riders into active riders as they are able to overcome unfamiliarity with the system. Google Maps will help promote the bus system by providing a direct link to SunTran’s website with every transit direction.

Download the Google Maps app from the Google Play Store to obtain transit directions on your smartphone; desktop users can visit Google Maps and click on the bus icon.
