WASHINGTON – A fatal accident occurred when a 70-year-old Washington man veered off the road and hit a light pole Thursday afternoon.

Ed Kantor, Washington City Police public information officer, said the man was driving northbound on 300 East near 700 South in Washington around 1:30 p.m. when something caused him to veer off the road. The vehicle then struck a light pole and the driver was pronounced dead by responders at the scene.

“It was most likely a medical event,” Kantor said.

As the incident appears to have been medical in nature, Kantor said the name of the victim will not be released by police. All he could confirm was the driver’s age that he was a local resident.
