ADOT completes I-15 repaving project in Virgin River Gorge; traffic impacts

MOHAVE COUNTY, Ariz. – Motorists traveling northbound in Interstate-15 through the Virgin River Gorge experienced delays today arising from the final phase of construction work related to the I-15 repaving project that started last summer.

Partial lane restrictions occurred today between Arizona mile marker 23 to the Utah state line, a 7-mile stretch, but traffic got backed up behind the construction as far back as Arizona mile marker 18, Arizona Highway Patrol Sgt. John Bottoms said.

Friday work was wrapping up by 3:45 p.m. and traffic should resume normal flow by 4:15 p.m. Bottoms said.

The final construction work is scheduled to resume next week, with partial lane restrictions in both directions Monday through Wednesday and possibly Thursday and Friday when all work should be completed.

Drivers are urged to allow extra time to reach their destination and expect minor delays. Drivers are also advised to proceed through the work zone with caution, comply with reduced speed limits and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT projects

In this final stage of the project, crews are grinding asphalt, setting recessed markers, adding pavement markings and stripings to complete the $11.6 million project that removed a layer of the existing pavement and repaved the roadway to provide smoother, longer-lasting pavement that will improve safety and mobility on the heavily traveled interstate corridor.

According to a statement released by it in May, Arizona Department of Transportation has budgeted nearly $15 million to repave another 13-mile portion of the highway that extends to the Nevada state line in 2015.
