WASHINGTON – The Washington City Fire Department responded to a fire Wednesday that torched a shed and damaged part of a home.
Washington City Fire Chief Brent Hafen said fire crews were dispatched to 39 Village Way shortly after 11 p.m., Wednesday. A shed in the backyard had caught fire, which then reached to the back of the home and was noticed by passing off-duty firefighters.
The firefighters warned the family inside of the fire and evacuated them from the home. The fire soon spread from the shed and got into the back of the carport. It also burnt through a back door of the home and got into a small hallway.
Once fire crews were at the scene, Hafen said it took about 20 minutes to put the bulk of the fire out. However, the fire had also gotten up into the truss system in the ceiling which complicated matters. Hafen estimated that the fire burnt the back half of the trusses before the fire in the ceiling was completely extinguished by 2 a.m.
The St. George Fire Department aided Washington City Fire in putting out the blaze.
Hafen said the shed is a total loss and that there is a large amount of smoke and water damage to the home. Structural damages could be as much as $50,000, he said.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation.
