Weather: Stream flood advisory for central Iron County

IRON COUNTY – The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for central Iron County until 6:15 p.m. tonight.

At 4:13 p.m. NWS Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain in and around the Cedar City area. Radar estimates 0.5 to 1 inches of rain has fallen around Cedar City with up to 2 inches just west of town.

Excessive runoff from this rainfall is expected to cause ponding of water and localized street flooding. Motorists are urged to use caution, including those traveling on Interstate 15.

Precautionary/preparedness actions:

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice – Turn around, don’t drown.
