HURRICANE – A three-car collision occurred on state Route 9 near Interstate 15 Friday evening when a woman stopped to make an illegal turn.
“We had three cars going eastbound off I-15 near the Coral Canyon area,” Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Dan Ferguson said, “one lady stopped to make an illegal turn to get to the Texaco station instead of doing it legally by the Harley-Davidson.”
As she stopped to turn, another car stopped behind her and a third car coming up from behind did not stop, rear-ending the second car which then rear-ended the first.
The collision occurred at 6355 West State Street (SR-9) at milepost 1, UHP Lt. Steve Winward said.
Ferguson said the girl driving the third car bumped her head, was seen by paramedics and ambulance personnel on scene but refused transport. He said she was standing and talking at the scene.
“She said she was going to take care of herself,” Ferguson said.
The driver of the first vehicle was cited for making an illegal turn and impeding traffic.
The driver of the second vehicle was not cited.
The driver of the third vehicle was cited as a contributor for either following too close or going too fast.

Why even bother when the “Law Enforcement” drive so close to you and even start driving aggressively when you are driving speed limit.
Seriously, the lady making an illigal u turn should have been the only one tickeded and maybe the 2nd driver not the third. They both stopped on a freeway far away from lights and did two illegal things. I show no common courtesy to anyone on that road and it pisses me off that uhp or hpd do not ticket left lane riders whch is illegal in the driving handbook. Logan is the only one enforcing it. Pretty sad it takes all on duty officers plus all of hpd to bring down a robbery at chevron. That road needs more signs and to be addressed by the police. They send out those stupid amber alerts and weather warnings to my phone this could be no different. But traffic violations do not make hurricane cops heroes. That road is screwed and they should close it down. I am sick of seeing 3-4 cops sit at chevron (with blimpies). Or at the hotels, and where that new holiciptor tour is and all they do is sit there and talk when drug dealers and people going 90 in a 55 get let go.
…
Ed. ellipsis.
This is one of the dumber posts I’ve seen on here. So you think the driver of the second car should have been sited? What was that driver supposed to do, just run into the idiot making the illegal turn? And as Mr. Lester said, below, if you rear end somebody, it is your fault. PERIOD. You are supposed to be in control of your vehicle at all times, so that you are able to avoid a wreck.
I’ve seen an awful lot of idiots make those illegal turns there. I guess UDOT needs to put up a barricaded median so that nobody can get across it. In fact, why the heck didn’t they do that in the first place?
If you ever rear end anyone it is your fault. There are no excuses. Ever. You were going too fast, not paying attention, following too closely, etc.
I’ve been on that road when drivers have either veered very suddenly or stopped cold in front of you. No matter what the paperbacks say, you cannot safely stop a car that’s doing 55mph in a reasonable following distance. You cannot do it. No the 2nd and 3rd car should not have been cited…it’s illegal to stop your car in the center of a traffic lane, not to mention arrogant and reckless. The first driver should lose their license, the other two should sue DOT for constructing such a wacked out exit without ANY signage (ANY!!!!) and no center median. This was a planned accident zone, if only through redneck engineering. .
Correction: There is an upside down “U” directional arrow there. But, it doesn’t say anything. I bar under it that says “Exit Right” would probably work.
As a 28 year retired law enforcement officer who personally investigated hundreds of motor vehicle accidents, I would leave the accident investigation to the officer at the scene. He took action after interviewing the drivers/occupants, other witnesses and interpreting the physical eveidence at the scene. Due to the magnitude of this accident i am sure that a supervisor was also present who reviewed this officer’s actions. The third vehicle in this accident did deserve a ticket if the officer determined through his investigation that the vehicle had adequate time to react but failed to do so because of being distracted or exceeding the speed limit. Tough to make judgement calls after just reading a post instead of actually having the personal knowledge of being there, examining the evidence and possessing the knowledge/experience of trained investigators.
I would highly suggest to most of you that you not make your opinions public. I am dumber and more ashamed of the people in my community for having read them. You exude uneducated dribble. Let the officers and troopers earn your tax dollars and do their jobs as they have been trained to do. For they are the only ones who know what has happened. I am sure they would not even think of telling you how to do your job. What gives you the right? If you are dissatisfied with law enforcement performance than attend your city council meeting and let it be know to the council members and police chief. To “no more revenue collecting” I am certain you exaggerate for effect. I travel SR9 daily and repeatedly and have yet to see any officers or troopers sitting at the Chevron/Blimpies any period of time. You do know that officers are allowed to take lunch breaks right? And moreover, if you have some super power that can identify a drug dealer by how fast they drive then PLEASE OH PLEASE hold a seminar so our officers can inherit your exemplary skills.
Nicely said John! Thank you.
These commets are the most rediculous I have ever read. First off, all the people who are bad mouthing the first driver need to simply keep their negative comments to themselves. I personally know the driver and she doesn’t need or derserve to lose her license. This lady is not even from this county and is not familiar with the road and how confusing it is. You were not there so you shouldn’t be making any comments about this person period. If any of you had a brain then you should understand that. Thank you to the few who have common sense and seemed to have a mere understanding of life and that people make simple mistakes. Doesn’t mean they deserve to be bad mouthed. The driver of the second vehicle is the only person who didn’t deserve a ticket so for the person who thinks they should’ve then you too should “edumacate” yourself a little more before you speak your mind.
Rather than trying to censor what people are saying, if you really do know this driver, you should encourage her to give up her driver’s license and take up bicycling instead! She certainly is too stupid to be operating a motor vehicle on a public roadway.
That intersection is very confusing especially to those who are not from here! If she was rear ended for slowing down trying to figure out how to use the exit it is the driver who rear ended hers fault as well! It is our reaposibility to watch out for other drivers. It was an accident! Heaven forbid you be in a town youre unfamiliar and get confused on a road way.. hopefully people watch out for you.
It is only confusing if you are blind, not paying attention, or just plain stupid.
Whoa there, that Plumber fella is sure full of it this morning! Almost makes my posts look tame. . .
