St. George 4th of July extravaganza

ST. GEORGE – Buoyed by the success of last year’s event, the City of St. George and Canyon Media will once again host a 4th of July extravaganza, the City of St. George Independence Day Celebration 2013.

Most of the day’s activities will take place at Vernon Worthen Park and the Dixie Sunbowl. A detailed schedule can be found here. Some activities are free, while others cost.

The celebration begins bright and early with the Uncle Sam 5K Fun Run at 6:30 a.m. Participants will receive a patriotic costume to run in and an Uncle Sam button upon completing the race. From 7:30 to 10 a.m., Staheli’s Catering will serve a hearty breakfast. Then the “United We Stand” Independence Day parade will line the streets of downtown St. George from 8 to 9:30 a.m., after which the crowd can enjoy and join in a performance of the national anthem at the main stage.

Family activities, including face painting, potato sack races, a dunk tank and much more, will be held from 9:40 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other highlights are continual live music, a medallion hunt, hot dog eating and talent competitions, performances from Payton Kemp and Mikalene Ipson and karaoke at the gazebo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At 8 p.m., 99.9 KONY Country will host a free concert at the Dixie Sunbowl, culminating in a massive fireworks display at 10 p.m. KONY will broadcast live and provide musical accompaniment during the show so that people can enjoy the display from all over the St. George area simply by tuning their radio dial and turning their eyes to the sky above the St. George city basin.
