ST. GEORGE – Even Cinderella had to go home eventually.

The clock struck midnight on a magical season for Snow Canyon Friday with two bewildering and disappointing losses resulting in the quick elimination from the 3A state softball championships.

Heading into the game 22-0, Snow Canyon took on Stansbury in the morning game and the Lady Stallions (28-2) owned the game from the get-go, winning 16-0.

Brytni Gurney, who has had an outstanding year in the circle for the Lady Warriors, gave up six hits in less than two innings, plus her defense let her down as SC committed six errors. She allowed nine runs, but only three of those were earned.

Stansbury scored at least two runs in each inning and pounded out 14 hits. Kaylee Robinson and Jocelyn Kaufmann had three hits apiece to lead the charge. Snow Canyon had just two hits, singles by Grace Walton and Skylar Gates.

The Warriors were then eliminated by Spanish Fork in a bizarre game of twists and turns.

The Lady Dons led 7-2 going into the fifth, but SC rallied for four runs to make it a 7-6 game headed to the sixth. That’s when Spanish Fork broke out the big bats, plating nine runs in the top of the sixth. Whitney Perkins and Brooke Davis both homered in the rally and combined for eight RBIs in the game.

Snow Canyon couldn’t score in the bottom of the inning and the 10-run mercy rule was invoked for the second straight game on a team that hadn’t lost all season.

Gurney and Walton had two hits each for SC, but the Warriors committed three more errors, giving them nine for the day.

Stansbury defeated Bear River 6-2 and will await the winner of Bear River and Spanish Fork in the morning game Saturday to play for the state title.
