ST. GEORGE – The task seemed insurmountable and unfortunately for Pine View, it was.

The Lady Panthers needed to win three straight Friday to keep their season alive. After six hours of softball, two victories and a valiant effort, Pine View finally ran out of gas, losing to Spanish Fork 12-0.

“Yeah, we kind of did,” coach Randy Green said. “We had a couple of games like this before, but fortunately there weren’t many. It was a great year. We won 22 games and made it to the next to last day of state. Hopefully we set a new benchmark for Pine View softball.”

The Panthers lost their first state game 3-0 to Bear River last week, but since had won four straight including Friday’s 8-4 early win over Uintah. Pine View also beat Canyon View, 8-5, something it was unable to do in two previous tries this season.

“I’m very proud of this team,” Green said. “We have some impressive seniors that we’re going to have to replace, but hopefully the young players see what it takes to be great and will work hard.”

PV opened the day with a four-run victory over the Uintah Utes. Then came a match-up with Canyon View, which had beaten Spanish Fork, Bear River and Grantsville in the last three weeks.

The Lady Falcons also had beaten Pine View in two meetings this year, taking a 4-2 win in St. George and a 4-3 win in Cedar City. But this time the Panthers bats came ready, racking up double-digits in hits en route to the victory.

The late game was never close. Spanish Fork scored two runs early. Upped the lead to 6-0, then 9-0 and finally adding three more in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.
