ST. GEORGE – A St. George man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly burglarizing a home and assaulting a police officer.

St. George Police Department Sgt. Sam Despain said that around 7 p.m. Tuesday, the 30-year-old man entered a home near 200 West 300 North through an unlocked door while the homeowner was inside. The homeowner immediately called police and told them the intruder was “acting very strange,” Despain said.

The man left the home as the 911 call was made. Officers apprehended him soon after.

“He didn’t cooperate with officers on scene,” Despain said.

The man assaulted one of the officers before being taking into custody.  The officer was not seriously injured, though he was taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center as a precaution.

The intent behind the man’s actions has not yet been determined, Despain said, though he added the man’s overall behavior was odd.

“It was a very random thing,” he said. “(The man) was not acting as a normal person should.”

Despain said the man had taken items from the home, among them a walking cane. The incident is currently under investigation.

The man has since been booked into the Washington Purgatory Correctional Facility on counts relating to aggravated burglary and the assault on the police officer. His bail currently stands at $59,469.

Ed. Note: Persons charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.

The booking photo certainly shows a person not “looking normal.” But I do notice that he does not appear to have been injured, and the article didn’t say anything about HIM having to go to the ER, just the officer. I congratulate the officers involved here for their restraint. Had this happened in LA, the perp probably would be in the hospital for a while.
