CEDAR CITY – Surprising no one, Desert Hills dominated the boys and Cedar dominated the girls Region 9 track and field meet Wednesday and Thursday at Canyon View High School.
The Thunder boys accumulated 167 points, far outdistancing second place Dixie at 111.5 and third place Pine View at 90. On the girls side, Cedar racked up 160 points, well ahead of Desert Hills and Hurricane, which tied for second with 114 points apiece.
Brad Wulfenstein continued his stellar senior season and is the state favorite in the 110 and 300 hurdles. Wulfenstein also won the region 100-meters and weas part of the Desert Hills winning relay in the 4 X 100.
The Thunder were clearly the fastest team on the track, winning the 4 X 400 and the sprint medley, which consists of two 200s, a 400 and an 800. Additionally, Bridger Cowdin took the 200 meters and Brigham Whitney won the 800 for Desert Hills.
Canyon View’s Scott Callister was the lone Falcon to win gold in the region, taking first in the 400.
On this day in Cedar, Jason Quinn of Dixie was the best distance runner, sweeping the mile and two-mile races. Dixie’s Kyler Smith took the high jump. Hurricane got the win in the discus with Jacob Nielson and Snow Canyon’s Jace Graft won the javelin. Graft was also the longest jumper, owning the long jump by four inches
Desert Hills got another gold medal in the shot put, with Blake Kvarfordt winning.
On the girls side, the amazing Aimee Bryson continues to look like on of the best athletes to come out of Iron County in a long time. The junior from Cedar took gold in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters. Teammate Kayla Shakespeare won the 100, giving the Lady Reds a clean sweep in the sprints.
Alexa Goulding of Desert Hills win the 100 hurdles and Shalynne Seegmiller of Dixie won the 300 hurdles. Pine View Rachel Stone won the two-miler.
The relays were split between three teams with Cedar taking the 4 X 100, Hurricane winning the 4 X 400 and Snow Canyon capturing the medley.
In the field events, Pine View’s Jodi Aitui won the shot put and discus, while Desert Hills teammates Tierra Orr and Megan Hanson won the high jump and javelin, respectively. Desert Hills’ Abby Taylor took the long jump.
