WASHINGTON CITY – A huge crowd turned out for Washington City’s annual Cotton Days celebration, complete with a fun run, parade, kid rides, vendor booths, all-you-can-eat breakfast from the Lion’s Club and festival activities such as face painting and cotton doll making, tractor pull and family softball.

One of the more touching moments of the morning came early on in the celebration as some 82 people ran in a Family Fun Run 5K race dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Boston bombings. Miles in the race were named after Martin Richard, Lu Lingzi and Krystle Campbell and the start/finish was dedicated to MIT police officer Sean Collier who lost his life to gunfire from the Boston Marathon bombings suspects.

The parade was composed of cars and trucks, tractors and trailers, all typical of the city’s agricultural roots, working their way down Telegraph Street towards Main Street and the  Pioneer Museum. Washington County Royalty graced the parade as well as a 4-year-old riding on a miniature horse and several characters from Star Wars.

At the end of the parade, a boy ran out and fell down right in front of a Washington City fire engine, as other teens cried for help. To the crowd’s relief, it was a flash mob comprised of sixth and seventh graders from Fossil Ridge Intermediate School – recently named the National Breakthrough School of the Year – dancing and teasing the spectators towards the big announcement of  YourWashington.org. The website is a new part of the Washington City website where city residents can share ideas with the community and connect with city government, read more about it here.

The city’s festivities will continure throughout the week;  Cotton Days 2013 schedule of events.
