UPDATE – April 29, 2013 – Tweet from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary: “137 pets found homes during our St. George, UT Super Adoption! The last to go home was a dog named Hope. How fitting!”
ST. GEORGE – Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, along with handfuls of other participating rescue and shelter organizations, and a total of 160 animals have come together in one parking lot in front of PetSmart, 15 South River Road in St. George. Puppies, kittens, dogs and cats are crying out for a “forever home” and some 42 of them already found one during the first three hours of the festival.
The Super Pet Adoption festival runs until 7 p.m. tonight and again tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Adoptive owners will walk away with a new addition to their family along with a PetSmart coupon book offering $250 worth of savings.

Buying a puppy from a store or a breeder can cost anywhere from $100 to $1,000. But today you can rescue a puppy for $50 or a kitten for $25. Adoption fees help groups cover costs like spay/neuter and updated vaccinations, as well as any critical medical costs. If you are planning on adopting an animal, Best Friends recommends coming prepared with a valid form of identification, payment method and, ideally, a letter of permission/reference from your landlord if you rent your home. Please note that all of the shelters and many of the participating groups offer same-day adoptions, however, some groups require home checks as part of their application process.
If you are a first time pet owner you may want to consult with Sherry Woodard, an animal behaviorist for Best Friends. Woodard has also been on a National Geographic Channel reality TV show called DogTown.
“Some advice for people when they come here looking for a pet this weekend,” Woodard said, “would be to really think about what is going to fit their family the best.”
Today the Best Friends Super Pet Adoption Festival started out with 160 animals. Three hours in on the first day, they had already adopted out 32 dogs and 10 cats.

I have two rescue dogs of my own and they are the best part of my life! I couldn’t imagine life without them. I hope all of these animals find loving homes. If I could have another dog I would be there in a heart beat.
