ST. GEORGE – The first Southern Utah Culinary Festival kicked off its Friday-Saturday event today at Vernon Worthen Park in St. George, with a substantial turnout.

The idea man behind this festival is Adam Stuart, the creator/ producer of the event.

“It came to me in the shower about 18 months ago,” Stuart said, “I wanted to find a way to facilitate an event where people could really get an idea, and ‘taste’ of what kind of foods this area has to offer.  In turn, this event would also give these locally owned and operated businesses some exposure, and help them get more customers during this difficult economy. That is one thing we really wanted to focus on: helping out locally owned and operated businesses.”

St. George is not unfamiliar with festivals; and most of them have many food vendors that participate as well. However, there are a few things that separate this event from than others. Stuart explained that there is a conscious effort to have smaller portions, so people don’t fill up at one place and prevent themselves from being able to sample the other vendors.

Father-and-son vendors Lon and Scott Allen from Sonny Boy’s Barbecue said:

“We’re excited that something like this is being put on for the public down here, and hope it will help get our name out to more people. We think it’s a great idea for people to get a taste of what we’re all about.”

The festival has more than just food as well. There is live music, a play area for kids, and a rock wall set up by the National Guard.

This festival will continue tomorrow
