Shelters join in Best Friends’ Super Pet Adoption weekend; goal 150 adoptions

UPDATE – April 29, 2013 – Tweet from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary: “137 pets found homes during our St. George, UT Super Adoption! The last to go home was a dog named Hope. How fitting!”

ST. GEORGE – The Best Friends Pet Super Adoption event returns to PetSmart, 15 South River Road, in St. George this weekend. An estimated 150 dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and even rabbits will be available for adoption from shelters and rescue groups from throughout Utah and from Mesquite, Nev. The Super Adoption Event will run from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

This event is a cooperative effort in which multiple animal groups including among others Best Friends Animal Society, City of St. George Animal Shelter and Washington City Animal Shelter in coordination with P.A.W.S.Ivins City Animal Shelter, We Care for Animals, Because Animals Matter, Iron County Animal Shelter, H.A.R.T. Homeless Animal Rescue Team, Second Chance Animal Rescue, Davis County Animal Care and Control and Enoch City Animal Shelter.

The Pet Super Adoption Event promises to offer a fun, positive way for the general public to see and consider adoptable animals all in one place in one big festival-like atmosphere. And there’s no time like springtime to introduce that new four-legged member into your family.

“We’re bringing some really good dogs,” Washington City Animal Shelter’s Robert Kirkland said, “some really good-mannered dogs.”

Kirkland said everyone was pleased with the success of the December 2012 event, which surpassed its goal for 100 adoptions, with 117 adoptions at event’s end.

Each participating rescue group and shelter at the event will have their own adoption application, interview process, and adoption fees. Adoption fees help groups cover costs like spay/neuter and updated vaccinations, as well as any critical medical costs. If you are planning on adopting an animal, we recommend coming prepared with a valid form of identification, payment method and, ideally, a letter of permission/reference from your landlord if you rent your home. Please note that all of the shelters and many of the participating groups offer same-day adoptions, however, some groups require home checks as part of their application process.

Meet Best Friends’ animal behavior consultant, Sherry Woodard, while visiting with and becoming acquainted with the numerous animals available for adoption. Adoption fees are $25 for cats and $50 for dogs (some exclusions may apply) and include spay/neuter, vaccinations, plus a kit with $250 worth of coupons from PetSmart.

Animals adopted during your lunch hour can be held for pickup after work.

Pioneered by Best Friends Animal Society 13 years ago, more than 25,000 dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and even rabbits have been adopted through the Pet Super Adoption events. Featured locations in 2013 are New York, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and St. George.

Best Friends Animal Society, is a national animal welfare organization building no-kill programs and partnerships that will bring about a day when there are “No More Homeless Pets.” The society’s leading initiatives in animal care and community programs are coordinated from its Kanab, Utah, headquarters, the country’s largest no-kill sanctuary.
