HURRICANE – A triple-car accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on state Route 9 that impacted traffic and left three people injured, resulting in one being transported to the hospital via Life Flight.

Around 4 p.m., Hurricane City Police officers responded to a crash involving three vehicles at the intersection of 3400 West and SR-9.

The accident blocked westbound traffic, which had to be redirected for approximately 90 minutes. Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue medical personnel responded to those injured and one person had to be extricated from a vehicle.

Life Flight was called to the scene to transport the individual who was extricated, while two other people involved in the crash were transported by ambulance. Their conditions and the extent of their injuries was not disclosed by the Hurricane Police Department.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. Utah Department of Transportation personnel also responded to assist with traffic control.

The accident was cleared by 6 p.m.

A separate, two-car accident occurred at Exit 16 on the northbound on-ramp for Interstate 15 off SR-9 at 3:40 p.m. The incident was relatively minor and did not impact traffic. One individual was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

I was at that same intersection Saturday night. There was somebody in a big white truck next to me and some kind of work truck up ahead at the intersection. When the light went yellow, I slowed down, the truck next to me sped up, and then at almost the last moment the work truck waiting to turn onto 3400 W decided to make his turn. I don’t know how the other driver didn’t annihilate that work truck or flip their own, or blow somebody else into smithereens in oncoming traffic, where they were trying to avoid imminent doom! Sadly it looks like someone else was not so lucky…be careful out there, woot!

How many more injuries and accidents at this signal with the dangerous flashing yellow arrow, does there have to be before UDOT and the city of Hurricane return the signal to its solid green arrow? I live near by and am frightened to death every time I approach this light. Hopefully, everyone makes it that was in this accident. The traffic has never gotten backed up at those 3 signals with the flashing yellow arrows. Lets protect our locals as well as tourists passing through our town. Shame on UDOT and Hurricane City if this is not reversed to the way it was.

There is nothing that can be done by the city, county, state or federal government, to protect people from the stupid actions of the seemingly retarded masses out there. You have to learn to take responsibility for your own safety. Defensive driving seems to have “gone out of style.”
But stylish or not, defensive driving is a life saver. People who whine and complain about the government not doing enough, are just not mature enough to take responsibility for themselves.
Get off your cell phone. Forget shaving, or putting on lipstick. GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR BACKSIDE while you are driving.

My heart goes out to anyone involved in an accident, along with prayers.

I drive through this intersection daily to/from work and I am THANKFUL for the new flashing arrow traffic lights. You don’t know how many lights I’ve had to sit through to turn left (with no oncoming traffic) because my car didn’t trip the light. People need to realize that before turning, oncoming traffic is going 55-60+ mph.

Maybe someone should research this first before jumping to conclusions. I believe these flashing yellow arrows have been up north for awhile before showing up in Washington County. Do they have the same issues up there? Or are the folks down south just unable to understand that the flashing yellow arrow means “HEY, DON’T TURN LEFT IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC!!!!” Sheeeshh

I’m with you! The flashing yellow lights are so much better, people down here just can’t drive for crap! Maybe they need to put up a sign that says, “Flashing Yellow Arrow means YIELD to Traffic”

  • Big Don April 24, 2013 at 7:08 pm

There is absolutely nothing wrong with those flashing yellow lights. They make a lot more sense than having to sit and wait through a light cycle when no one is coming.

I believe what is really scary is the half baked plan that UDOT has for the upcoming changes to Exit 8. Folks here don’t seem to understand the very basics of driving. How many are going to die in head-on collisions in that insane design?

I am glad to see I am not the only one that LOVES the flashing yellow lights. It makes daily driving on SR-9 so much less of a pain in the butt.I hope people figure that out soon, but with how few people can figure how to use a round about properly around here, the outlook on that is pretty grim.Even four way stops have a lot of people stumped here. Why?

    • Big Don April 24, 2013 at 8:30 pm

I’ve got to admit that I’m not a big fan of the round-a-bouts. I know how you are supposed to use them, but I also know how people actually do use them.
