WASHINGTON, Utah — A fire destroyed a Washington City home and left a local family homeless in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
The fire, which is believed to have started in the garage area, completely gutted the house, located at 121 N. Scenic Drive East. All members of the Peter and Lani Lawrence family were accounted for and were unharmed, though the house appears to be a complete loss.
At least four fire trucks and two ambulances responded to the fire, which began at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday. Neighbors gathered as several small explosions went off inside the home in the garage area. Fire crews worked feverishly on the blaze, which was still flaring up as of 2:30 a.m.
Thick smoke billowed in a westerly direction as the fire crews knocked down the flames, which reached heights of 20 feet or more.
“I smelled smoke, so I got up and checked my house first,” neighbor Sam Stevens said. “Then I went outside and it was much stronger. It’s a scary situation.”
