ST. GEORGE – The Dixie Power (formerly Dixie Escalante) Kite Festival is back for its 14th year in a one-day wholesome, uplifting, kite flying, entertainment-blasting foray of family fun tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the SunRiver Golf Course in St. George.
The Kite Festival returns every spring with its successful mission being to promote reading as a habit and encourage students to engage in family-oriented physical activity.
Qualifying students earn a high-quality kite or an age-appropriate book for their reading efforts throughout the year. As an adjunct to the primary mission of the Kite Festival, contributions are made to the Washington County School Foundation for distribution to schools found to be most actively involved in the Kite Festival, based upon attendance.
For those who have not “earned” their kite, all are invited to bring their own kites to fly in a designated area, and kites are available for purchase at the festival as well. Everyone can participate in this event, regardless of experience, training, financial means or physical abilities. There are no fees for parking, shuttle rides, admission, entertainment and fireworks. In addition to kite flying, there are free children games as well as $1 & $2 priced children’s activities including bouncy toys, small train rides, and other rides. And there will be plenty of food available at the festival at reasonable prices.
Several local elementary school choir groups will be performing throughout the day and at noon there will be a flag ceremony conducted by the Utah National Guard.
Free concert at 6 p.m. – The Hubcaps
As the kites come to rest and the activity winds down, it’s time to bring in the band. The Hubcaps, comprised of Dixie’s own Gary Ford, Kent Sevy, Devon Archer, Sean Sevy, and Brant Jones, bring a wide and familiar repertoire of music ranging from the Beatles to the Eagles, Ella Fitzgerald to Michael Buble, Elvis to Billy Joel, Glenn Miller to Jo Stafford, and the Beach Boys to John Mayer. Whether you stay through from the day’s activities or come on down in the evening, The Hubcaps are a sure crowd-pleaser.
When: Saturday, April 20, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. / The Hubcaps concert starts at 6 p.m.
Where: SunRiver Golf Course off Exit 2 of Interstate 15
