ST. GEORGE – After first making an appearance as the subject of the 2012 DocUtah Feature Film “Hip Hop Maestro,” composer and musician Geoff “Double G” Gallegos returned to Dixie State University Thursday night to perform with the school’s jazz ensemble, performing music he personally composed and arranged.

Gallegos sent the music to DSU Music Director Glenn Webb in March, then arrived, himself, two days before the concert to rehearse with the Jazz Ensemble.

“I felt very welcome, it was excellent,” Gallegos said. “It was interesting to hear how everyone takes music in their own approach. That’s the great thing about music.”

In addition to playing classical arrangements, the ensemble paid tribute to artists like The Roots and Justin Timberlake, mixing contemporary influences with traditional jazz styles.

“I love the classics,” Director Glenn Webb said. “But they were doing the pop music of their day, and we have to do the pop music of our day.”

Influences from both Gallegos and Webb created a performance that defies the traditional classical music paradigm, implementing rap vocals, rhythms typically exclusive to hip-hop, and musical improvisations with more creative latitude. This combination attracts both the demographics interested in classical music, as well as the younger crowd more familiar with hip-hop culture.

The music program continues to expand at DSU, and interested musicians are invited to contact Glenn Webb through the university, and try out for any of the various performing groups.

Fine arts performances continue Friday with the DSU Symphony Band performing “Tempered Steel” under the direction of Gary Caldwell.
