ST. GEORGE – The SpinGeeks continued their Southern Utah series of cycling races with the Tour Del Sol multi-stage race in St. George this weekend. Cyclists competed for almost $5,000 in prizes in the two-day event.
With course lengths ranging anywhere from 11 to 80 miles in distance, cycling enthusiasts of all ages were put to the test as they battled the clock, along with everything else the unpredictable race conditions threw their way.
The Saturday portion of the race included a time trial section on Southern Parkway on the south end of St. George, followed by the criterium, transforming the old St. George airport runway into a circuit track.
The largest part of the race is happening Sunday. With a maximum distance of 80 miles, the race loop will take riders through the scenic Gunlock and Snow Canyon State Parks. Results will be posted on the official race website.
The Tour Del Sol is the second of a series of nine SpinGeeks races starting in Mesquite, Nev., in March and running through late October. The series includes races that vary from road races to trail rides, some as long as 100 miles.
This early in the year, St. George is an ideal location for a wide array of outdoor activities. SpinGeeks will hold their next race on April 6 in Green Valley. Additionally, St. George will play host for numerous other races, including a children’s triathlon in April, two triathlons in May, the official St. George Marathon in October and a scattering of 5Ks and charity runs.
