Suspects in Mesquite shooting identified

MESQUITE, Nev. – Two individuals involved in Thursday’s brief shootout with police have been identified by authorities as Utah residents.

Shortly before 8 a.m., Thursday, Mesquite Police officers pulled over a 1996 Geo Metro with Utah license plates. In the vehicle were Daniel Wesley Runyon, 40, of Richfield, and Tina Cornall, 48, of St. George.

Runyon stepped out of the vehicle and engaged two officers in a short-lived gunfight. One of the officers, Craig Empey, was shot in the leg. The other officer was unharmed. Runyon was shot twice.

Empey was taken to Mesa View Hospital in Mesquite for treatment and was released later that day. Runyon was airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas and is reported to be in stable condition.

Runyon faces two counts of assaulting officers with a deadly weapon and multiple related counts: one count of an ex-felon illegally possessing of a firearm, multiple counts relating to drug possession and trafficking.

Cornell was detained by police at the scene and taken in for questioning, eventually leading to her own arrest on multiple drug-related counts. She was transported to the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.
