Utility scam targets St. George residents

ST. GEORGE – Over the last several months, citizens of St. George have received phone calls from an individual claiming to be a city representative. They have been told they are late paying their utility bill, and if they do not provide payment their utility services will be turned off. We have had reports of the individual asking for a credit card number and others asking for a money order.

This is a scam.

If a customer is truly late on their bill, the city will mail them notices prior to shutting off services. The City of St. George will never call and threaten to shut off utilities and ask for payment in this manner.

The only time the City will accept a credit card is if utilities are already shut off and the customer comes in to the utility office at City Hall to pay.

If anyone receives one of these calls, and is concerned that their utilities may be affected, you can contact the city at 435-627-4000 or 435-627-4700 during regular business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.).
