Local Elks host end-of-life preparation workshop for veterans and loved ones

ST. GEORGE – In an effort to better organize and simplify what veterans and their loved ones need to know prior to a veteran’s passing, a special workshop will be held at the Dixie Elks Lodge #1743 on Monday concerning the matter.

The workshop will focused on a booklet called “The Survivors/Exeters Guide,” which provides “all the information a vet or survivor needs to know about continuing benefits after death,” said Betty Archambault, public relations director for the Dixie Elks Lodge #1743.

Archambault said she was supplied a “freedom grant” from the Elks that was specifically geared towards veterans to produce the booklet. With the grant and aid from other organizations, she expanded and localized a preexisting booklet.

“There an estimated 87 things that have to be done” when a veteran passes, she said. The booklet provides information that sees to all of these needs and helps individuals plan ahead.

While planning for end-of-life matters is something most people don’t like to think about, Archambault said that having things pre-planned would enable to survivors to grieve without having to worry about loose ends.

Up to 600 booklets have been produced thanks to the grant. Copies have been distributed to various veterans’ groups in the area, and anyone wanting more information about material presented in the booklet is welcome to attend the workshop at the lodge Monday.

The Suvivors/Exeters Guide is available to veterans for free. Archambault said non-veterans may also find useful information in the booklet and can buy a copy for $5.

A lunch will also be held at the lodge following the workshop and those interested in attending are asked to RSVP. Archambault said 80 of 125 slots have been taken as of March 14. Persons who wish to participate in the lunch can call Don Custer at 435-674-4196 to make arrangements.
