ST. GEORGE — The Snow Canyon preseason was anything but storybook, but the Region 9 season so far has been nothing but a fantasy.
Stephen Kleiner scored off a rebound late in the first half and the Snow Canyon defense made it hold up as the Warriors beat Pine View 1-0 and improved to 2-0 in region play.
SC was out-scored 9-1 in the preseason and went 0-3 in those non-league games. But after drubbing Canyon View 4-1 Tuesday night, SC was feeling great heading into the crosstown rival game with PV. And though the win wasn’t as easy, it was a game Snow Canyon never trailed and the Warriors defense, with junior goalkeeper Tyson Brough, was a stone wall.
It was Brough’s first shutout of the season and the second goal of the year for Kleiner. The Warriors next match is Tuesday at home against Hurricane.
Dixie 3, Hurricane 0
The Flyers earned three points in the standings with the big win at Hurricane. The defending champs got it going early and never looked back. Alex Green scored twice and Konner Aitken added a goal while Tristan Cowles recorded the shutout.
Green now has eight goals in six games and is one of the top scorers in the state of Utah. It is the second shutout of the year for Cowles. Dixie is now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in region play. Dixie’s next action is next Friday at home against first-place Snow Canyon.
Cedar 2, Canyon View 1
The Redmen got their first region win by doubling up the Falcons. Brock Shipp and Brett Sillitoe scored for CHS, while Brady Christensen netted a goal for CV, 2-4 overall and 0-2 in region. Cedar is 5-0 on the year and 1-0 in region. Tuesday, Cedar plays at Desert Hills while Canyon View is home vs. Pine View.
