HEBER CITY – There is really only one bad thing about sports. Eventually someone has to lose. Unfortunately for the Desert Hills Thunder, they were that someone Friday night in a 52-46 first-round defeat to Wasatch.
The Thunder and Wasps were tied at halftime and Desert Hills held a slim one-point lead after three quarters as the teams went back and forth most of the night. But Wasatch pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Thunder 19-12 in the final period.
Ty Rutledge recorded a game-high 19 points for the visiting Thunder, but no one else managed to break the double-figures mark for Desert Hills. Jackson Card finished with seven points, while Taylor Houston and Chase Thompson added six points each. However, the Thunder struggled from the charity stripe and made just 8 of 13 free throws. Those five freebies proved costly as the game ended in a six-point margin.
Jeff Murdock paced the Wasps with 17 points and Chris Johnson added 10 points. Wasatch moves on to the quarterfinals where it will take on Spanish Fork, the No.1 seed from Region 12.
Desert Hills ends the season with a 15-7 record.
