LAVERKIN – Gunshots heard in LaVerkin last night were met with an area search that later extended to Cedar City, where a man was caught by Cedar City Police and turned over to LaVerkin Police for booking.

At 8:13 p.m. residents of a LaVerkin neighborhood surrounding 200 North 60 East called 911 reporting three gunshots heard in the area. LaVerkin Police responded.

The incident was a domestic violence incident involving a 70-year-old father and his 47-year-old daughter, LaVerkin Police Det. Travis Romney said . When they arrived, the daughter told police she was unsure where her father had gone, that he could be in their shed or may have taken off in their vehicle, a green sedan.

At that point, Romney said that Washington County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team was called out to clear the shed and the residence, and areas of the neighborhood were blocked off at 200 North while it was searched.

Surrounding cities were also notified to be on the lookout and the suspect was ultimately picked up in Cedar City, and then turned over to the LaVerkin police at the border of Iron and Washington Counties at 11:45 p.m.

The suspect, Warren Farrell, 70, was booked on domestic violence assault, reckless endangerment, domestic violence criminal mischief, domestic violence weapons discharge and domestic violence disorderly conduct. Farrell is eligible for but has not yet posted bail.

Romney said that the domestic violence character of the charges is an enhancement, meaning that bail is a little more than normal and penalties may be higher. The enhancement may be applied to people who are related, whether father-daughter, as in this case, spouses, or even ex-spouses.

Iron County will not be bringing charges in this incident.

Editor’s note: Persons arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty or otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
