ST. GEORGE – At about 5:13 this evening, a female pedestrian was hit by a vehicle when the driver of the vehicle looked left but failed to look right as he made a turn from 100 East onto St. George Boulevard in St. George.

The woman and a man, both mid 50s, were in the crosswalk when the vehicle – a travel van or “box van” – made the turn, the man jumped out of the way but the woman was hit. She was alert and conscious when she was transported from the scene, St. George Police Lt. Joseph Hartman said, and she did not appear to suffer any obvious traumatic injuries.

“When the officers got to the hospital they were doing a bunch of tests,” he said.

The driver, a man in his 40s, was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian. Hartman said there was no indication of speed or driving under the influence or distracted driving contributing to the accident, just “inattention while driving,” he said.

Names of the parties involved were not available as this report is published.

When my oldest 2 children started driving I stressed to them the importance of looking right before turning right. I have seen way to many near misses over the years when drivers failed to look for pedestrians crossing, before making their right turn. Especially near the college. I have expressed to all three of my children the importance of looking out for people who are turning right, before entering a crosswalk. I tell my children never to trust a driver to avoid hitting them. Never trust the other person to be the one paying attention. Sounds a little paranoid, but I would rather have my kids be paranoid, but alive.

I had four different near misses yesterday. All were other vehicles turning in front of me while I was driving in St George and had to hit the brakes hard to keep from slamming into them. And I saw three accidents too yesterday what is up. Did everyone think it was bumper car day or what ?
