WASHINGTON D.C. – The president and vice president today unveiled a package of executive orders, 23 of them, to end gun violence in America.
Today, Senator Mike Lee made the following statement in response to the president’s announcement regarding new executive actions on gun control:
“It is unfortunate that the president is using the tragedy in Newtown to advance a set of proposals that would do little, if anything, to prevent these kinds of shocking events,” said Senator Lee. “Instead, his laundry list consists of demands that Congress limit the rights of law abiding citizens, executive orders that essentially affirm the status quo, and initiatives to increase federal interference into state and local law enforcement and educational institutions.”
“Without specific legislative language, it is impossible to evaluate the potential consequences of the president’s proposals. But I am deeply concerned that the president’s approach is inconsistent with fundamental Second Amendment rights and encroaches on the authorities of state and local governments. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I look forward to this debate and am committed to ensuring that the rights of citizens are not infringed and public safety is not diminished.”

Maybe he’ll Instagram a plate of spaghetti next, a legitimate testament of showing the public of his ability to use a keyboard. Mr. Senator does a whole lot of talking without saying much of anything, other than relaying more oogie-boogieman propaganda for the NRA to use to scare the public into thinking the bill of right is soon to burn.

Propositions from Washington have only skirted the possibilities of enhanced background checks to be performed when purchasing a fire arms. Mr. Senator’s flippant disrespect of a leader in regards to insinuating he taking advantage of a gigantic tragic massacre for political gain is, perhaps, not quite the right step to take here.
As much of America holds a death grip on their guns, we should be asking why we are so dependent on the idea of protecting ourselves and from what? We live in a post-9/11 society in which fear is bred 24 hours a day through television and media. Other countries with similar social structures such as the UK don’t have this problem and don’t have guns in the hands of every man, woman and child. I am glad that a Utah Sen. has at least said something about this. To think that we no longer need protection from a tyrannical government is to assume that human nature has changed in the last 200 years. And while I hope I am evolving as a person history teach us that human nature as a whole has stayed the same for thousands of years. It is the nature of all governments to gradually think they know whats best and you don’t. If not kept in check they will funnel your choices down to “manageable” options.
Besides for me it isn’t even about keeping balance that boils my blood. Its that they have stirred up such a mess over a tool and not addressed the real issues. Things like mental health treatment and awareness, Family relationships, learning that what I want doesn’t need to happen right now or else. We live in such an instant gratification cultural. Address these issues and it wont just be gun violence going down it will be all violent crimes declining.
