Canyon View gets first region win at Hurricane

HURRICANE  – Canyon View opened on a 13-2 run in the first quarter and enjoyed hot shooting from beyond the arc en route to a 54-44 win over Hurricane.

Brady Barrett scored a game-high 14 points and Chad Corry finished with 13 points and the Falcons claimed their first region win of the season. The duo combined for four of Canyon View’s seven 3-pointers.

“After the loss to Dixie we just decided we were going to come back and we didn’t do a scouting report on Hurricane,” Canyon View coach Rob Potter said. “We didn’t talk about it being a Region 9 game. We didn’t talk about it being a must-win. We didn’t talk about any of that stuff and we just focused on us.”

Garet Cahoon led Hurricane with 12 points and eight rebounds and Jordan Ence added nine points, but the Tigers were ultimately unable to overcome the early 11-point deficit.

Coach Brian Vaiafanua said he wasn’t sure what happened in the first quarter that allowed Canyon View to jump ahead so quickly.

“We placed a little bit more emphasis on this one because we haven’t won at home,” Vaiafanua said. “I felt like this was a key game for us. The kids maybe felt the magnitude of this game was going to be pretty crucial. That’s really the first time I’ve seen them respond like that.”

Canyon View improves to 1-3 in the region and hosts Pine View on Wednesday. Hurricane drops to 0-5 in region play and travels to Cedar to take on the league-leading Redmen on Wednesday.
