ST. GEORGE – Sometimes the overall record of a team doesn’t tell the whole story, especially in basketball.

The Dixie State College women’s basketball team holds a 6-5 overall record as it gets set to resume play on Monday at Seattle Pacific University. And on the surface, six wins to five losses does not appear to be a great win-loss ratio, but hidden inside the just-above-average record is an undefeated team.

Despite having an up and down preseason, the Dixie State women sit atop the Pacific West Conference standings. The Red Storm are 4-0 in PacWest  action and have won five out of their last seven games.

Head coach Angela Kristensen said they wanted to play a tough non-conference schedule to prepare the team for conference play.

“It doesn’t really matter how you do in the non-conference,” Kristensen said. “It has no bearing on your seed in the conference or the conference tournament. Obviously you want to win whatever game you can, but the biggest thing for us was to grow as a team. Even though we’re 6-5, we’re still 4-0 in the conference and in first place. Our goal is to win the PacWest and that’s what we’re going to try to do.”

The Red Storm are happy to have Johnna Brown back in the lineup this year after taking a one-year hiatus from basketball to focus on softball. Brown leads Dixie State in scoring  and rebounding, averaging a double-double with 12 points  and 11 rebounds per game. Kaylah Miller and fifth-year senior Mandy Munns round out the other double-figure scorers with 11 points each per game. Erica Hayes is also making steady contributions with nine points per game.

The game against SPU on Monday is the last non-conference game for Dixie State. The Red Storm resume PacWest play on Saturday in Riverside, Calif., against the Lancers of California Baptist University. The Lancers are 7-2 overall and 1-0 in the PacWest.
