MESQUITE, Nev. – The Virgin Valley Artist Association is pleased to announce that Katherine Bailey has been named the Artist of the Month for December 2012.
Raised in Glendale, Calif., Katherine Bailey’s artistic interest was first sparked as a toddler, while watching the Mickey Mouse Club on television. She began coloring pictures of the characters and said that her parents’ praise of her talent inspired her lifelong love of art. She describes herself as a “flesh-and-blood old girl wielding the paint brushes,” and she wields very well, as her numerous recognitions attest to.
She was named to two honor societies at California State University and after receiving a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico, embarked on a career as an educator. She has won numerous prestigious awards, including the 2001 Charles Hughes Award at the OPA/UPA Edward Hopper Art Center, the 2000 General Pencil and Pastel Journal Award at the Multimedia Art Exhibition of OPA, first place at the “Lucky 13“ International Small Works Competition and Exhibition at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery in 2006, first place in the Virgin Valley Artist Association exhibit “Revolution” in 2009. Her work was shown in the “Visions of Zion” National Park Centennial Exhibition at the St. George Art Museum and can currently be seen at Seaside Gallery in Nags Head, N.C. and at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery.
Trying anything new and different is Katherine Bailey’s passion. Studying nature has kept her focused on how to create her visions, but she has also taken classes, devoured countless art books, spent abundant hours in museums and paid close attention to how original art can motivate sales in advertising. She works in multiple mediums, including oil, acrylic, embroidery, watercolor, gouache, enhanced portraits, calligraphy, miniatures and collage and has also dabbled in creative writing.
“After all these years, an inspiration for a new technique or way of expressing the mystery and variety of life keeps me getting up in the morning,” she said.
Katherine Bailey is married to David Bailey, a gifted photographer. Upon his retirement from law enforcement in 2006, the couple moved from California to Mesquite. They are currently co-authoring a book they call a “pen-and-brush novel.”
“In both my art and writing, I try to capture something of the beauty and mystery of nature,” Katherine Bailey said. “As a miniaturist, I try to see and recreate a world in a grain of sand. An underlying purpose in all of my work has been the search for unity in a world so often shattered by violent multiplicity.”
Her Artist of the Month exhibit will be on display at the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery from Dec. 3 to Dec. 29. The gallery is located at 15 West Mesquite Boulevard and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 702-346-1338.
