WASHINGTON COUNTY – Heavy holiday weekend traffic is suspected to be the cause of a series of accidents on northbound Interstate 15 in Washington County Sunday afternoon.
Joe Dougherty of the Utah Public Safety Division of Emergency Management said traffic was very dense on I-15 Sunday, but was moving well until around 2 p.m. when a two-vehicle accident was reported at milepost 30. Around the same time, another two-vehicle accident was also reported at milepost 31.
A three-vehicle accident was then reported at milepost 29 around 3:25 p.m., and another two-vehicle accident at milepost 22 shortly thereafter.
No major injuries were reported, though Dougherty said two people, each from separate accidents – one at milepost 29 and the other at milepost 31 – were transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
He also described them as little more than a series of “fender benders.” The accidents caused traffic on I-15 to be delayed in some areas, while slowing to a crawl or completely stopping in others. As of 5 p.m., however, Dougherty said each accident had been cleared, though traffic may still be somewhat delayed due to dense post-holiday travel.
“(The accidents) were mostly just a huge headache for everyone involved,” Dougherty said.
