ST. GEORGE — Five athletes, three sports and five college scholarships took center stage at Snow Canyon High School Wednesday afternoon.
Sure, it was a made-for-media event complete with banners, ceremonial pens and flashing camera bulbs. But it was also a momentous occasion for the Snow Canyon program. Shipp, who will compete in the Pac-12 Conference while playing for the University of Utah, is one of the top lead-off hitters in the western United States and has blazing speed.
Harris, who led Snow Canyon to the 3A State Basketball Championship as a junior last season, will take her talents to Brigham Young University. She averaged 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists last season.
Gates and Sechrist were key contributors in the Warriors 3A State Baseball Championship last spring. gates, a fireballing left-hander, won seven games for Snow Canyon and also played first base. He signed with BYU and will play for former Dixie State coach Mike Littlewood, who now coaches the Cougars.
