ST. GEORGE – Proper disposal of hazardous household waste items is always recommended, but what happens when those items are not suitable for the landfill and you just can’t find the time or the place to toss them?
This Saturday, the Washington County Solid Waste District offers an opportunity to rid your home of potentially hazardous materials quickly and conveniently at the fourth annual Washington County Solid Waste Hazardous Household Waste Collection Day. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., bins will be set up in the parking lot of Hurst Ace Hardware that accept a variety of dangerous materials.
Types of accepted materials
• Aerosol cans
• Car batteries
• Fluorescent light bulbs
• Fuel
• Herbicides
• Medical waste
• Oil
• Paint
• Paint supplies, including thinner
• Pesticides
• Propane
• Rechargeable batteries
Chemical products in homes are deemed Household Hazardous Waste once they are no longer in use or have passed their expiration date. Because household waste is not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, it is especially important for citizens to dispose of them responsibly.
“We only offer these disposal days once or twice a year, so take advantage of it,” said WCSW manager Neil Schwendiman. “Clean out your home and garage. There’s no better time to do it.”
