WASHINGTON CITY – “A Fight for Kellie,” to be held Nov. 3 at Staheli Family Farm, will raise funds and support for a local woman battling breast cancer.
Kellie’s story
Kellie Gubler was diagnosed with Stage III invasive breast cancer in April 2010. She went through eight intensive rounds of chemotherapy, 28 rounds of radiation, and six surgeries including a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction.
In August 2012, Gubler received the shocking news that the disease had returned. Now classified as Stage IV metastatic breast cancer, it has also spread to her L4 vertabrae, scapula, ovaries, uterus and lungs.
Though her condition is incurable, it is very treatable. She has resumed radiation and chemotherapy and will begin anti-hormone therapy. The goal of this treatment is to allow her to live as normal a life as possible. Her journey is documented on her family blog.
Gubler, 35, is married to her best friend and biggest supporter, Dave, and together they have three beautiful children. Her ordeal over the past two years has taught her a great deal. She knows that each day is precious and believes that her life this far has been a miracle. Her motto is “Today is a gift. I will embrace it.”
The fundraiser
A Fight for Kellie will be held Nov. 3 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Staheli Family Farm in Washington City. A yard sale, bake sale and silent auction will be ongoing throughout the event. Other highlights include a pancake breakfast, fun runs through the Staheli Corn Maze, games and train rides.
At 12 p.m., a collection of pink-painted pumpkins will be hoisted by a crane, dropped and then smashed to symbolize “bashing out breast cancer.” All who attend are encouraged to bring pumpkins. Donations of items for the sales and auction are welcome. 100 percent of the event proceeds will be given to the Gubler family.
