Game Preview Capsule: Pine View at Canyon View

GAME PREVIEW CAPSULE
Pine View (3-4, 1-3) at Canyon View (1-5, 0-3)
Previous Meeting – Pine View 49, Canyon View 0 (Oct. 7, 2011 at PV)

PANTHERS
Classification: 3A, Region 9
Coach: Ray Hosner (12th year, 97-37 overall)
Offense: I-back and spread
Last week: Lost to Hurricane 30-23 in overtime
Players to watch: RB Prentiss Miller had the best game of his career, with 348 yards against the Tigers. He should have a couple-hundred by halftime this week and Panthers fans should be happier with an easy win. Miller leads the state in rushing behind OLs Logan Stott, Cody Boyer, Jesse Pederson, Justin Gunter and Guillermo Fierro. Receiver Cameron hughes has made some noise lately.
PPG: 24.9
PAPG: 24.1

Trend: True, it was a heartbreaker last week in the OT loss to Hurricane. But the Panthers proved they can hang with the wlite teams in the region, which means they can hang with the elite teams in the state. However, the reality is that PV needs a little help to make the playoffs. Plus, they must win tonight and in two weeks against Snow Canyon. Even then, a fourth seed is about the best Pine View can hope for, which means road trips the first week (or two) in the playoffs. PV can do it, but it won’t be easy.

FALCONS
Classification: 3A, Region 9
Coach: Alex Huxford (fifth year, 7-35 overall)
Offense: Spread, pro-set
Last week: Lost to Dixie 54-13
Players to watch: RB Dallin Dastrup has rushed for 387 yards this year. QB Koy Huxford has 1,240 passing yards and eight Tds, with nine interceptions. His favorite target is McCoy Johnson, who has 24 catches for 349 yards and two touchdowns.
PPG: 11.7
PAPG: 37.0
Trend: It’s looking more and more like Canyon View will go through another Region 9 football season without a win. We hesitate to bring it up, but that will make six straight years without a region win for the Falcons. Of course, they do have a shot at Cedar next week. But Cedar has been losing games close. CV has been getting blown out.

GAME OUTLOOK
Let’s be real here: Pine View is bigger, stronger and faster than Canyon View. Plus, the Panthers are motivated after the close loss to Hurricane. Last year the Panthers beat the Falcons by seven touchdowns and it’s realistic to believe that will happen again. Also, the Panthers want Miller to win the state rushing title and so he will get a lot of touches in the first half until the game is out of reach.

STGnews PREDICTION
Andy Griffin (29-5) — Pine View
Jeff Ames (29-5) — Pine View
