I simply kept the family arsenal out of my children’s reach for the first 7 years of their lives. When they turned 8, I brought them out and put them through a rigorous training program. My 9 and 10 year old now have the ballistic and tactical prowess of the most elite Navy SEALs and are capable of taking down a small army. They don’t have guns in their possession, but they know how to quickly access them should the need arise.

Meanwhile, I should mention that I myself could not hit the broad side of a barn, and I lose control of my bowels at the sound of gunfire, but my kids are good to go. And by “kids”, I mean my 9 year-old chihuahua, and a stuffed Teletubby doll that Mother gave me 10 years ago. I like to have “pretend time”.
